May’s favourite blog explores the detrimental effect ‘Green’ thinking has had on house prices in Auckland and, indeed, most cities around the world. If most people cannot afford a home of their own, the blame can be put fairly and squarely on Auckland Council’s policy of restricting land supply. The blog also explores how ‘Green’ thinking is undermining democracy with the bureaucratic tail wagging the political dog.
Auckland is in dire need of leadership that can get back to basics by providing the city with core infrastructure that addresses the needs of the many rather than the few and is future, not past, focussed. The new mayor must establish a culture shift within the organisation so that Council bureaucrats work for the citizens, their paymasters, rather than for their own political agenda.
