Page 9 of the minutes Item 15d) Requests Auckland Transport to start implementing $3 charges in the current undesignated areas at Matiatia.
Charging for car parking is the province of Auckland Transport. Moves to increase the costs of parking have proved very unpopular in the past, understandably so since once upon a time parking at Matiatia was free. When Auckland Transport first started charging for parking there was an outcry from enraged commuters who boycotted the parks closest to the terminal for years. Increasing parking fees adds to the daily cost of commuting and thus imposes a financial burden on many Waiheke families.
It is left to Auckland Transport to be the unpopular organisation that increases fees. Previous local and community boards have supported their ratepayers by opposing increases in costs sought by AT. It is therefore very brave indeed of this Waiheke Local Board to actually REQUEST Auckland Transport to implement charging for something that was previously FREE. Why would any Board that represents the community vote to increase fees for their already hard pressed ratepayer? It’s a mystery, and no clue is given in the minutes as to the reasoning behind the move.
It is even more mysterious when you consider the vociferous outrage on the part of one Board member in particular, Becs ‘thousand-dollar-an-hour’ Ballard. In the same week she voted to support the Board’s request to increase car parking fees at Matiatia she was bleating to the Herald about the high cost of ferry fares charged by Fullers and how difficult it was for the poor commuters to cope with rising prices. I hope commuters use their boycotting powers to demonstrate their displeasure to this most cynical and hypocritical of Board members.
I wonder who this Board thinks it is representing. It is certainly not the commuters of Waiheke.
