Both incidents demonstrate the lengths to which the hard left will go to try and deny freedom of speech to opposing voices.
Ben Ross, who wants to become Councillor for the Papakura ward of Auckland Council in the forthcoming local body elections, took it upon himself to report the Facebook page Len Brown Must Resign for its exposure of his comments on Twitter regarding a current Auckland Councillor, Dick Quax, during a Council meeting.
Mr Ross tweeted during the meeting: ‘Hey Dick Quax you are meant to shut up when the Chair speaks you rude old fool’.
Mr Ross is entitled to his opinion and I’m sure it was water off a duck’s back to Cllr. Quax who is the regular target of such bullying from Mr Ross and his friends in Generation Zero. Mr Ross is a keen supporter of Penny Hulse, Deputy Mayor of Auckland Council. I understand he is part of her inner circle. Is this the sort of person Papakura wants to represent them? If they do, then they do themselves an injustice.
The Len Brown Must Resign Facebook page was established as a voice of opposition to Len Brown and the Terrible Ten Councillors who voted for a 9.9% rates rise.
A screenshot of the tweet was sent to Len Brown Must Resign who posted the tweet and some robust comment ensued. Mr Ross then reported the page to Facebook administrators and the page was taken down. None of the comments were as bad as Mr Ross' original tweet.
Mr Ross is an example of a prospective Councillor who can dish it out but can’t take it. He is exactly the sort of person who is unfit to represent any electorate; any time, any where.
In similar vein an incident happened to me today. Chris Walker a Trustee of Waiheke Radio and friend of John Stansfield, partner of far left Green MP Denise Roche, rang me at home to harangue me about my blog Friends of Alison Park lose battle to retain OBC building for the community. He took issue with some comments and wanted the blog removed. Naturally I would not consent to his request. He is perfectly at liberty to leave a comment on the blog if he disagrees with any content or wants to make any pertinent points. Haranguing me at home at the weekend is not an option. I put the phone down on him.
The hard left really do not like having the light shone on their activities. Their methodology is to try and stifle any opposition by bullying. On Waiheke they thought they could shut down this blog in its early days with a barrage of bullying. I have left all comments on my early blogs there for all to see to sort of behaviour they regularly resort to on social media including Facebook, Twitter, and their hidden chat rooms. This behaviour is a hallmark of the hard left, especially the Greens, who are sadly over-represented on Waiheke Facebook pages.
It appears Jerry Flay, a regular guest blogger, can predict the behaviour of these bullies with some accuracy. On his recent blog: A Social Media Guide to Waiheke Local Board Elections he wrote this:
“It is likely that during this election the haters cabal will cite her (me) and her track record at every available opportunity, in the most malignant terms, irrespective of the topic under discussion.”
Chris Walker’s attempt at bullying is the first salvo of the ‘haters cabal’. They must be fearing I will stand again.
Free speech is one of the cornerstones of democracy. Those who try to shut down other people’s right to exercise their freedom of speech are people the public should steer well clear of. It is especially disturbing when such people want to become elected representative or have a stranglehold on the media.
And by the way Chris, don’t bother phoning me at home about this blog. Save your breath for your output on your radio station.
