The vote was split 7 to 7, but the undemocratic addition of race based votes from the Maori Independent Statutory Board’s two unelected members came into play adding two extra votes to shore up the Labour/Green dominance on Council. This is only to be expected as the role of IMSB members is solely to get tens of millions for themselves to administer their gravy train on condition they vote the way the Labour/Green Mayor chooses.
You can watch part of the debate here as Penny Hulse silences Cllr. George Wood (again).
What membership of this talkfest is designed to do is continue the Mayor’s and Auckland Transport war against cars. Expect any Labour/Green Mayor to introduce a car emissions tax regime on top of the 10%pa rates rises they have already factored in for the next ten years. They will, of course, say they are only meeting their obligations under C40 and its not their fault etc. etc. We’ve heard it all before.
The Officers' Report goes on to say: “C40 membership requirements include emissions reporting, participation in regional networks, attendance at biennial meetings and completion of case studies and a city profile for the C40 website. Work is already programmed and will meet membership requirements. Reporting requirements for the Compact of Mayors are similar for C40 and are already underway to be completed by December 2015. Resourcing and management of the relationship with the network and creation of case studies and the city profile would be led by the Chief Sustainability Office, with input from relevant teams across council.”
From the above it can be seen that there will a monumental extra cost to the ratepayer in the form of a whole new bureaucracy to be paid the lavish salaries rampant in Auckland Council.
Whether or not ‘climate change’, i.e. the weather, is a man-made phenomena, rather than the natural occurance we’ve always understood it to be, is still hotly debated by scientists around the world. Most people in New Zealand, and most in Auckland, are sceptical of claims that the weather is manufactured by man. Even if there is some localised warming effect on the weather caused by more people congregating in cities, the jury is still out on whether this is a ‘good’ or ‘bad’ thing.
Spending more of our money on junkets and empire building by bureaucrats to finance dubious pseudo-scientific talkfests can only be seen by ratepayers as more hideous waste of our limited resources. When people are being forced out of their homes by rates rises 100 times the rate of inflation and roads and parks are not being maintained, it is disgusting of Councillors and bureaucrats to add to their burden.
The carbon emissions of the junket to Mexico alone are guaranteed to raise the temperature of Aucklanders’ blood to boiling point. You never know the extra heat might just be enough to change the climate and rid the city of its Labour/Green Mayor and Councillors.
