Supporters of Brown have been outraged by the high-handed and divisive way she was demoted with no reason given apart from a lame excuse that they had always planned to rotate the position, although there is no evidence to verify the claim and Brown disputes it.
Tensions between Walden and Brown have been evident all year which is not surprising given Brown’s intellectual superiority and dedication to the job. This is a more plausible reason why she had to be dropped. Walden will brook no opposition.
According to reports from the meeting, one member of the public shouted it was only fair to rotate the Chair’s role but Walden was not amused. Walden then tried to silence Brown after she read out a prepared statement. Meeuwsen was rude and insulting to Brown, not for the first time, and tried to intimidate her throughout, although, as usual, he failed with Brown responding that Meeuwsen had an anger management problem. I had heard a similar accusation for a friend earlier today who said she felt intimidated when Meeuwsen ‘lost his cool’ with her on the phone. It is not surprising that Meeuwsen isn’t even considered to be a possible for the Deputy Chair. Ballard was so quiet no-one was sure if she was actually there. As a member of the public shouted out ‘‘you need to attend the meetings girls.”
It seems the Board is divided amongst themselves with each pursuing their own agenda. This became evident after the motion to supplant Brown had been passed. Walden requisitioned $50000 from the old library refurbishment to make available for his own agenda regarding Onetangi Sports Park, though not for the pavilion. It is doubtful if this is legal given that the funding was specifically allocated to the old library by the Governing Body. Typical of Walden's duplicitous behaviour, he then said "I think we can find the funding to make up the shortfall to the library in other funding accounts.” Why then can’t he find the funding for his OSP ambitions from those accounts? Because that funding does not exist, that’s why.
By now an angry Waiheke community is beginning to wake up to the fact they’ve been duped by the Gang of Four. They are a divided and divisive group who are hell bent on pursuing their own agendas, do not understand their roles, do not understand due process and have lost $12 million funding secured for them by the first Waiheke Local Board. A bit of a mess really. Brown is well out of it.
The community doesn’t like assassins. Long term it might well be Brown who has the last laugh.
