NZ Herald reports that Auckland Council has confirmed the cut to the Westpac Helicopter rescue service but approved just under $14 million to 9 other cultural, arts and rescue services. The Councillors meet this afternoon to consider the Mayor's promise of $900k to the helicopter service to make up the shortfall.
The Auckland Council has approved a $14.3 million funding package for 10 regional amenities, which includes a cut for the Westpac helicopter rescue service.
It will be interesting to see if the Councillors back the Mayor. They must be wondering where the promised $900k is coming from in the increasingly cash strapped budget. The Mayor has backed them into a lose/lose situation. If they fail to support him they will be seen as the bad guys hurting a much needed rescue service. If they support him they'll be endorsing his spend, spend, spend philosophy.
