Is it any wonder people have lost faith in mainstream media when they print blatant bias like this in the editorial.
Let's acknowledge the courage of those who are willing to defend the revised Unitary Plan and see it through. It may be easy enough for the mayor who is not seeking re-election, but not easy for Deputy Mayor Penny Hulse or council members Arthur Anae, Bill Cashmore, Linda Cooper, Chris Darby, Alf Filipaina and Calum Penrose. They have kept their nerve and put the city's housing needs before their electoral safety.
Sir John’s change of heart meant that the Brown, Hulse et al have lost their majority for the planned zoning changes, with the majority of Councillors now wanting them withdrawn
Brown and Hulse, his deputy, are now running scared, so they have called a special, behind closed doors, briefing for the Governing Body by the planners. This is the usual tactic when the Mayor and his bureaucrats sense they have lost control of the elected representatives. They scare them by telling them they can’t do this and they can’t do that because of the ‘legal implications’, conveniently forgetting that Councillors are there to represent their constituents not the bureaucrats.
Councillor George Wood, one of the Councillors who has consistently opposed the rates hikes and many of the provisions in the Unitary Plan, has made details of the briefing public. By now, even the greenest of new Councillors should be familiar with the gagging routine.
Governing Body Briefing on the Proposed Auckland Unitary Plan (Councillors Only)
GEORGE WOOD·SUNDAY, 14 FEBRUARY 2016
Auckland councillors to receive a special Unitary Plan briefing. Invitation states:
"The purpose of the briefing is:
Unitary Plan - following the recent community and media interest in Council's position on rezoning this is an opportunity for all Councillors to receive a full briefing and work through the legal and other implications of changes to Council's position."
At the Reception Lounge, Level 2, Auckland Town Hall on Thursday 18 February between 1.30 pm and 4.00 pm.
I suspect that some Councillors who really want a bob each way, like Mike Lee and Cathy Casey, will miraculously change their minds claiming ‘there was nothing else they could do’ . It remains to be seen. Thursday will be an interesting day.
