Wade-Brown asked “I’d like the opponents of the cycleway to say what they're doing for climate change, young people's independence and general health and fitness."
Back came this great answer.
Well Celia here is your short answer* — we say we will vote everyone responsible for this stupid cycleway out. And we have a lot more to say to you.
We will teach our children that cycling is not the ONLY way to be independent.
We will tell them that they can walk, scooter, run or skate to school. That they can play on the sports fields and do a whole bunch of other healthy activity on the beach, in the hills, in parks and even on the streets.
We will teach them that there are many environmentally sound ways of being independent.
We will teach our children to be independent in thought. We will teach them to be wary of desperate politicians and strange people who teach them how to ride bikes. That they might lie and try to trick them while wearing their green cloaks of sanctimony.
We would teach them how democracy works and the difference between 5% and 95%.
We will ask them to think how they would feel if we let their smallest sibling have the larger bedroom, or when a small but whiny group in class always get to tell them what to do against their wishes.
We will teach them about sharing the footpath and being considerate to others. We will tell them that riding the footpath might be more enjoyable than using the cycleway on which grim faced adults whizz past, sometimes abusing kids as they cross to the kerb from Mum’s car.
And if we were really honest, we would also tell our children that sometimes some desperate mummies and daddies use them as pawns in their games.
And in terms of being responsible for our environment Celia, here are some inconvenient truths for you:
• We will walk, run, scooter, skate around our suburbs. And we will even cycle when we can and where we can.
• We will stop you slowing down the buses—most of us need these and will use them as much as we can.
• We will stop you slowing down private vehicles—most of us need these and will use them as efficiently and responsibly as we can
• We will point out that YOU are increasing petrol use and emissions, and wasting OUR money to pander to a tiny group that lie and promise nothing but hope.
• We will work with other suburbs and stop this disease from spreading.
• We will tell you to stop patronizing us and insult our intelligence as people who care equally about the environment.
We will think for ourselves and act on what is appropriate to us without being taken in by your bullying, inane buzzwords and your fashionable hysteria of the day.
All Aucklander ratepayers have been forced to pay and additional 4% tax (called a Transport Levy) on top of 5 years of draconian rates rises in order to pay for new cycleways for the less than 1% of cyclists who commute to work. This has come about because cycle activists realised it was far easier to manipulate the bureaucracy from within. They now run Auckland Transport’s planning department.
Like Wade-Brown, Len Brown et al they are all believers in the Climate Change religion. This is a fanatical sect that believes all cars are bad for the planet and so must be removed from our roads. They are, without exception, sanctimonious prigs.
Opponents of the Island Bay Cycleway are to be applauded for their fight to have the obnoxious and unsafe cycleway removed. My advice – get rid of Wade-Brown while you’re at it.
