No wonder - Laila's losing her RAG (Red Alliance with Green) forged on Waiheke 20 years ago.
Internet Party leader Laila Harre has criticised the Greens for talking about the possibility of a co-operation deal with a National Government just eight days from the election - a proposal that National has slapped down and exploited.
"I think it is seriously mis-timed," Ms Harre told the Weekend Herald.
She said it was crucial that progressive parties focused on mobilising turnout to change the government and the amount of early voting so far signalled the potential for a significant increase.
"I think the Greens' statement is unfortunate. It risks demoralising those who are confident and hold hope that the progressive parties are focused on a change of government," Ms Harre said. "It is not the time for any of those parties to be forming relationships of any nature with the National Party."
Orapiu Grove Ltd (later Orapiu Grove Farm) brought together shareholders Stansfield (Roche’s partner) and Laila Harre (who in 1999 became a minister in Jim Anderton’s Alliance coalition with Labour in government). Aussie Norman was doing his doctorate on the red/green Alliance party when he was introduced into the fold. Lurking in the background was a wealthy American, part-time local resident Tim McMains, long rumoured to be a key financial backer of the Greens, Roche and Stansfield (in their various endeavours) and Hague.
Norman has never lost his true colours. Once in Parliament, he set about establishing his ‘new’ party machine, gradually culling the old (ie. older than him) Green Party founders and faithfuls. Not surprisingly, his brave new world eventually included Hague (from the Health sector) and then Roche (from the unions).
When friends fall out the wounds go deep. This wooing of National by the oily Norman will seem more like treachery than simple backstabbing given the entangled history of the group and may well count as unforgiveable in any post-election fallout. If this RAG-tag of alliances is breaking up before the election imagine what a mess the country is going to be in if they are anywhere near a sniff of power. There’ll be blood on the streets as they tear first one another and then the country to shreds.
