The pollsters and establishment pundits who cast their runes early predicted that the Trump train would eventually run out of steam and hit the buffers. As the train rolled on, gathering pace rather than losing it, they saw every Cruz victory as the hoped for turning point against ‘that man’. They cannot abide that he is his own man, a loose canon, someone who upsets their cosy world. They do not understand Trump and because they do not understand him, or the appeal he has with voters, they fear him.
The same pundits are already casting their runes predicting that its all over for the Republicans for four more years because Trump has no chance of winning against Clinton. They don’t learn do they? Their polls and runes and charts mean nothing. They do not understand that this is a grass roots revolution against what the man in the street sees as a corrupt political system where politicians can be bought, silenced, or rewarded by powerful lobby groups.
The man in the street believes Trump cannot be bought because he has enough of his own money that he doesn’t need anyone else’s. This is a huge plus in a world where giving in to pressure groups is the norm. They believe this frees him from the shackles of political correctness, that tyrannical force for repression that robs them of their basic liberties and is so very un-American.
He will appeal to blue collar Democrats who have seen their jobs decimated on the altar of ‘climate change’ so beloved of Obama. He will appeal to all those tax paying, middle of the road voters who foot the bill for the bleeding hearts of every ‘liberal’. He will appeal to all those who are not protected by the system. In other words, he has cross party appeal that will make him a much more formidable challenger to the establishment figure of Hilary Clinton than is currently being predicted.
His popularity with grass roots voters lies in the very fact that he is unconventional, is not part of the political establishment and speaks to the fears and frustrations of those who have suffered at the hands of the politically correct elite.
The political elites around the world, whether it be David Cameron in the UK, Angela Merkel in Germany or even John Key in New Zealand, will be sensing a shifting of the ground beneath their feet. In Britain and across Europe the ‘unprotected’ are rebelling against the unelected bureaucrats who rule the European Union. Grass roots campaigners want to take back control of their countries.
Grass roots Americans want to take back control of theirs. They see Trump as the man who can do it for them. They could well be right.
