Waitemata Local Board is the rich, urban board representing Auckland Central. I say rich because it is the place where all the money is being spent that is being suckled out from every other local board’s budget. The Board area is the recipient of most of the public transport infrastructure funding including the train wreck that is the City Rail Link, the new electric trains, the multi-million dollar cycleways, the new bus interchange in Albert Street – the list goes on and on. And the list doesn’t even include the other infrastructure like the revamped waterfront.
Stephen Berry of Affordable Auckland takes up the cudgels on behalf of the ratepayer.
What a Popping Waste of Money
“There’s something different in the water drunk by Waitemata Local Board resulting in a large waste of money,” says Mayoral candidate Stephen Berry. “I’m still struggling to work out exactly what Pop is but it appears to be a bunch of artists paid by Waitemata Local Board to make mischief and attach crap to pedestrian lights.”
“The organisation named Pop first appears to have commenced its activities with the politically incorrectly named White Face crew engaging in ‘roving tomfoolerly and general shenanigans.’ Next it seems they might have put the word pop in some places but it really is hard to tell from the pulsating visuals on their website. Now I gather they have begun tying tubes and devices to hit them with to various public utilities all funded by ratepayers.”
“I seem to remember enjoying participating in tomfoolery and shenanigans in my not distant twenties but it wasn’t funded by Waitemata Local Board and I never imagined for a second that any local board would actually give me money for doing it.
“Pop certainly will be amusing to some but paying for it is not even in the outer realms of core Council business. It was only recently that Local boards around the city were protesting budget cuts which could lead to reduced library hours. Now we find they’re spending in on rubbish.
“So come on Waitemata Local Board; how much has this cost and which idiots voted for it?”

Aucklander Stephen Berry is in the running to be super city mayor under the 'Affordable Auckland' banner, he is also standing for Waitemata and Gulf Ward and Waitemata Local Boards.
Mr Berry has hit out at a new exhibition funded by the Waitemata Local Board and Auckland Council to the tune of $200,000.
He says it's a waste of money and involves a bunch of artists attaching things to pedestrian lights.
One of the exhibitions includes Pop Ping Pong in Aotea Square which aims "to engage Auckland residents and visitors in friendly competitive game play and spectating".
So is it worth the money?
Everything else is hunky dory in Waitemata I guess. There are no beggars in the streets, the parks are adequately maintained, there are no potholes in the footpaths. Yeah right!
It will come as no surprise that the Councillor for Waitemata Local Board is the economically illiterate Mike Lee who recently voted in favour of raising the average rates rise for Auckland ratepayers to 9.9% presumably so they can pay to keep his rich constituents in the manner to which they have become accustomed and prop up his inflated salaryf. The ratepayers of Auckland need to make sure he never gets a job on Council again. The same goes for all the members of the Waitemata Local Board who voted for this waste of ratepayers’ money. I suspect that’s all of them.
