See the burning eyes of the zealot. Sense the absolute conviction in the words of the fanatic. Rest assured, these people will have their say, and try to have their way, irrespective of it's popular appeal.
Democracy cannot be tolerated if you are a true believer. And the laws and morals of the democratic must be ignored and scorned in your quest to enforce your views on those who disagree.
Never mind that they are the vast majority; they are wrong. Wrong, wrong wrong. We know best. And we will flout them and their ways to flaunt our triumphal convictions, and in so doing fear no consequence.
No, this is not the mantra of IS, although it very well might be. Instead it is the way of those fools who go by the name of Greenpeace.
The deluded leftovers of a bygone era, the sorry products of dope laded liaisons between the unwashed and the unthinking, urged on by the lyrics of Dylan, the relics of a past protest who simply cannot recognise their ignorance is not wanted by the sane and the normal.
Today some of their number scaled Parliament House to voice their protest at the government's climate change policy, or lack of it. Really? It's beyond most rational people to envisage a scenario where this could have any impact other than greater glory for themselves in the green ranks.
Imagine the Prime Ministerial office.......
JK: What's that smell?
Bill English: It seems to be coming from the window. (Pokes his head out) Crikey, there are some protestors on the roof. Smells like they haven't washed in months. Maybe they are dairy farmers. Oh hang on, they've got a placard. Oh, don't worry, it's just those green dickheads banging on about climate change, nothing to worry about (closes window)
JK: No, hold on Bill, if they are on the roof, we have to do something. Quick, get a new law drafted. Ban all cars, shoot all cows, and dairy farmers too, come to think of it, close down Tiwai Point, and get that CRL in Auckland funded tomorrow.
Bill English: What? Really?
JK: Nah, just kidding, have the SIS shoot them down if they are still there in the morning.
Actually, if he did say shoot them down, I wouldn't have a problem with it - why should they be treated any different from any other organisation which deliberately breaches National security and endangers life, even if it is only their own miserable ones on this occasion. If the people on the roof had long beards and were shooting Allahu Akbar, you can be sure the bullets would be flying.
But what do they think they will achieve by this action? Because all it does is turn normal people with greenish consciences against them - and the causes they espouse.
I have been saying this since the 80s - you won't change people by shouting at them. Change comes from within and to work it must come willingly. If Greenpeace want to be taken seriously by powerbrokers, have a bath, a haircut, put on a suit and meet with them.
But doing it this way just goes to confirm the suspicions most people hold - that the climate change lobby are the marginals and the nutters - and therefore so probably is the climate change phenomenon.
Of course, they won't take my advice, because that's not what drives them - achieving anything. No, these are disenfranchised people for whom a cause gives them reason. The legion of the lost. It gives them companionship where society spurns them, and it gives them a nice little income where industry would give them none.
Where you and I might go to a game on Saturday, this mob of hapless idiots go to a protest; it doesn't matter which one of what they are protesting; their own failiure to achieve or fit in drives them to join with others of their kind. It gives them a security of mind, knowing they are not entirely alone.
And for that I feel sorry for them. I pity them, and they have my sympathy.
But what I cannot forgive them for is their destruction of the legitimacy of possibly worthwhile causes.
Today's actions will have achieved 2 things: it will have hardened the resolve of the tiny minority, and it will have turned thousands away from considering what may well be a legitimate cause - all because they wanted to be glory boys.
And for that, I suggest this course of action. Turn off the cameras, starve them of media oxygen and leave them up there, just dismantle the scaffold.
