New Zealanders are the fourth biggest gamblers per head of population in the world – a shameful figure that Peter Dunne must take action to remedy, says Labour’s Internal Affairs spokesperson Trevor Mallard.
It is quite legitimate to say we should reduce the level of gambling harm. It is nanny state paternalism to however condemn all gambling as shameful and claim that NZers overall should be spending less.
I will be off on a holiday to Oz later this year and will be enjoying spreading my losing streak to help pay for their RSLs. I don’t gamble in any other way but I enjoy the frisson of possibility each time those tumblers turn.
The problem with Labour and the Greens on this issue is they are too PC, too Puritan – all killjoy and nanny state.
Their constant message is “the State knows what’s best for you. You can’t be trusted to make the best choices for yourself so we’ll do it for you by stopping you self-harming.”
Knowing this just adds to my pleasure every time I go to the RSA and lose another $20. It feels like I’m cocking a snoot at our bloated State and the PC brigade.
