My blog a few weeks ago pointed out that they had voted themselves this $10,000 of ratepayers’ money, $5000 capex (capital expenditure) and $5000 opex (operational expenditure), to spend without sufficient transparency and accountability.
Herein lies the danger of electing five novices to important community positions in charge of other people’s money. They both don’t know the ropes and are too self-absorbed to learn them. In his 18 months on the last Local Board, instead of gaining some nous, Walden played protest politician and railed against anything and everything.
What will happen to the $5000 now? Will it be returned to Council, along with another $30,000 unallocated opex, to go into the general Council pot so that it can pay for the increasing mountain of debt being ramped up by the Mayor and Council?
As if it isn’t bad enough to be faced with the highest rates rise in Auckland, Waiheke has a local board that is saying it is so bereft of ideas of how to improve the lot of Waiheke residents that they want to hand your money back.
Take a leaf from the former Waiheke Local Board and Community Boards before them – use the ‘wash-up’ opex on weed control and planting. There are still years of work to do out there cleaning up the environment, so we can have a Waiheke we are proud of. It isn’t good enough to hope tourists will know their weeds from their native bush. Anyway, isn't this supposed to be the ‘Green Party’ board?
I hope it isn’t going to be a case of dumbest, Walden, dumber, Brown, and just plain dumb, the other three stooges.
