Instead the Paul Walden led Board wanted to use the $1.5million to fund a school pool so all other projects were stopped. Now Mayor Len Brown has decided that if the WLB doesn’t want to spend the money he will do it for them by taking it for his own pet project the Central Rail Link (CRL). What’s more there is to be no community pool and, just in case anyone still thought there would be a school pool, it was confirmed in the last WLB minutes that there won’t be.
However, the Mayor and Governing Body did give back $250,000 for a single project – the refurbishment of the old library space. Everything else has been lost. If the money has been allocated for the old library refurbishment then that is what the money must be spent on. Paul Walden cannot decide he wants to spend it on other projects like his bridle bridge to Brigadoon.
Walden still has plenty of money left in the pot for this year’s SLIPs projects. This includes $543,000 for capital projects and nearly $250,000 for operational budgets so the Board can hardly plead poverty. True they’ve lost all the SLIPs money (roughly a million dollars a year for the next ten years) for the future but, for now, they’re awash with money.
For example, they will use the money for such pressing issues as concept plans, slush funds for Paul Walden and Shirin Brown to use, a BBQ for themselves and their mates, hitching posts for horses (Walden is a horse rider), signage and an eye-watering $70,000 for uncover old land fill on the golf club lease area (all perfectly safe) and redistribute it around the course to prevent to golf club’s own development plans. The Walden family vendetta against the Golf Club is well documented.
Is it any wonder the community is angry at the mismanagement of their money by a Local Board intent on using our money to further their own ends rather than the greater good of the community. They are not yet angry enough but they soon will be.
