Ms Brown was the one who first accused ‘Angry John’ Meeuwsen of having an anger management problem, so she should not have been surprised when he let rip for three minutes at someone who, having made his presentation to the Board, said he was prepared to answer any questions.
This is how Public Forum is supposed to work: Members of the public come before the Board to talk to matters that appear on the Board agenda or, are within the Board’s delegated authority. Protocol and common decency entitles the person presenting to be listened to attentively and respectfully. Board members can then ask questions if they feel there are points that need clarification. They are NOT entitled to rant and rave at members of the public (even if they disagree with them) and it is not an occasion for them to grand-stand and push their own views. Above all, it is the Chairman’s job to make sure his Board members do not forget the etiquette of their role or the fact that it is the ratepayer who pays their salaries.
In this instance, ‘Angry John’ failed to ask a single question and Chairman Walden not only failed to pull him up on that account but also sat back while ‘Angry John’ submitted the member of the public to verbal abuse. After the three minute tirade ended, the presenter, (who happens to be a lawyer), asked if he could respond, but was refused permission to do so by Chairman Walden. Clearly, Walden can’t control a meeting. So, not only did the Chairman permit a Board member to act out of order, he also denied his target the right to the basic freedom of speech.
To add insult to injury, both local papers (which continue to whitewash the antics of the Board) also denied freedom of speech to the lawyer’s wife when they, predictably, refused to publish her letter:
How upsetting for John Collings’s daughter and young grandson to witness the angry, aggressive outburst by Local Board member and ‘Our Waiheke’ campaigner, John Meeuwsen against their father and grandfather at last night’s LB meeting, where he was making a submission for the local golf course as their honorary solicitor.
The man has an anger management problem which Shirin Brown referred to at the LB meeting on 11 December last year. He needs to undertake an anger management programme.
I see a Tui sign coming up: ANGRY JOHN FOR MAYOR - YEAH RIGHT
Think about what the ‘Our Waiheke’ group, led by Angry John Meeuwsen and championed by this Board wants for Waiheke – COMPLETE CONTROL of Waiheke’s local government. Now, imagine an island overseen by this bully boy and his cohort Walden. It would make Russia look like a kid’s playground.
