Walden's statement demonstrates clearly why he and his Essentially Waiheke Party are unfit to lead Waiheke. They do not understand the fundamental purpose of local government as stated in the Local Government Act.
10 Purpose of local government
(1) The purpose of local government is--
(a) to enable democratic local decision-making and action by, and on behalf of, communities; and
(b) to meet the current and future needs of communities for good-quality local infrastructure, local public services, and performance of regulatory functions in a way that is most cost-effective for households and businesses.
For the leader of a Board to say to he and his political Party (Essentially Waiheke) are anti-business is to say he and his Party will not meet the current and future needs of the community, the sole purpose for which they were elected.
There are nearly 1500 small businesses on Waiheke providing the bulk of local employment. The only reason we have local government at all is to support these local enterprises by providing the infrastructure and services to help them conduct their business as efficiently as possible, because by helping people retain jobs and sustain their families we create healthy communities. That this Board has failed to do so, and will continue to fail to do so if re-elected, and doesn’t even want to do so, demonstrates they are nothing more than a waste of time, energy, money and space and unfit to govern.
When Walden says ‘we need to make sure we don’t split the vote’, the ‘we’ he is referring to is his political party, Essentially Waiheke, not the Board, but he seems to confuse the two, as does his ignorant propaganda sheet who tell all potential candidate to contact Walden rather than Council.
So he is running scared. He is worried someone might come along and actually stand against his Party which has run Waiheke so badly for the last three years. He is hoping someone, anyone, with more competence that his current crew will come along and rescue him just so long as he gets to chose who it is, so he is calling for possible candidates to put their names forward for him to vet. He must believe, and I am told he does, that he has a God-given right to be the sole ruler of the island.
Any worthwhile candidate would have nothing to do with this current cabal. Indeed, what is needed for the future wellbeing of the island are independent candidates who understand their role and are not motivated by personal greed and political correctness.
Thank goodness there are some who have said they are putting their names forward in opposition to the 'Essentially Waiheke' Party.
Meanwhile I suggest they keep their names away from the Local Board’s propaganda sheets (i.e. both local papers) as long as possible. The media has demonstrated its bias in favour of ‘Essentially Waiheke’ for three years, and this latest propaganda piece for Walden is nothing more than a fishing expedition to assess any opposition.
I wonder how many others besides me were sent the following email.
Good afternoon Jo,
I'm wondering if you will stand for the local board elections later this year - can you please let me know?
If others are standing on a group ticket with you, can you please let me know their names and the name of the group too.
Please can you briefly let me know what you would like to achieve if elected as well.
I would like some information by midday tomorrow, though obviously there will be plenty of opportunities for you to send more detailed updates as the process progresses.

As for the other part of Walden’s statement, that he is anti-development, one can only marvel at the hypocrisy. Walden and his family are developers. They want to develop an 80 house village on one of their many land holdings on the island, where doubtless they want other intensification projects.
Would you trust anything this man, his Board or his propaganda machines say? They are examples of the ‘do as I say not as I do’ school of politics and media. They are unfit for purpose and we should make it our business to ensure they go out of business as quickly as possible.
