Ratepayers and renters realise they now have organisation with a big voice that echoes their desire to see an end to ever increasing rates rises, lack of consultation and a culture of waste that has led to a rates rise that is 99 times the annual rate of inflation.
Over 200 members from all local board areas have also volunteered to help the Alliance make good on its promise to hold the ‘Terrible Ten’ who voted for this draconian rates rise to account in the run up to the local body elections in fifteen months time. The first volunteers’ meeting was held a fortnight ago to form a plan of action that involves targeting the ‘Terrible Ten’ with a leaflet, billboard and advertising campaign in their electorates. This will ensure voters do not forget the names of those Councillors who voted in this extravagant budget that threatens to force many out of their homes.
In addition to members and volunteers the ARA has also amassed a substantial treasure chest from donations (membership is free) with which to make good on its promise to target the ‘Terrible Ten’ and to fight for lower rates.
The Alliance expects another big rise in membership and donations once rates demands drop into letterboxes in a month’s time. For many their demand will be way in excess of the 9.9% rise they have been conditioned to expect. Once they look at the dollar amount and calculate the percentage increase in dollars and cents since last year they will be in for a shock.
In just over two months the Ratepayers’ Alliance has achieved numbers in excess of the total membership of Labour and more than National's Auckland membership. The Alliance is now a force to be reckoned with in Auckland. Ratepayers from other parts of the country are asking for the ARA to expand its influence to their locality.
For this the Alliance owes a big ‘ups’ (or is it Oops!) to Len Brown for being the most wasteful, profligate and financially irresponsible Mayor Auckland has ever known.
