Meanwhile the Board has voted more money to extend the trail from Tahi Rd to Calais Terrace. Essentially it is a trail that goes from nowhere to nowhere, rather like the infamous ‘Bridle Bridge to Nowhere’. The trail comes to a grinding halt to the east just before the road crossing at O’Brien’s Rd and will end abruptly at Calais Terrace. The trail doesn’t even have the, admittedly dubious, merit of connecting with the infamous bridge.
$400,000 has been spent on a vanity project for the benefit of the horse-riding Chair of the Board Paul Walden, aided and abetted by every member of the current Board. It isn’t even fit for purpose. It is the worst example of wasting ratepayers’ money seen on the island in many a long year.
It’s not as if there aren’t areas of pressing need that require funding; roads are full of potholes; drains are blocked with debris that has been allowed to accumulate causing flooding; parking needs continue to go unaddressed. These are core Council services that have been neglected under this failed Board. The cumulative effect has been, as one resident pointed out, to make the island look tatty.
Soaring rates have pushed up the costs of owning and renting homes. Ratepayers and renters alike are struggling to make ends meet. The very least they expect from their elected representatives is that they spend their hard earned cash wisely on core Council services. Instead they have seen it squandered on vanity projects, junkets and cronyism.
It’s time for a change. You know what to do.
