There was one peculiar question directed at me about access for community groups to Council facilities. I had no idea what answer the question was seeking. The first Waiheke Local Board had the task of reviewing community leases to ensure the widest possible community access to their assets. It saddens me that the current Board has reduced community access by granting exclusive use of community facilities to a tiny number of groups. Let’s not forget that community facilities are paid for by everyone through their rates.
Apart from allowing some undignified barracking of me by Paul Walden whenever I got up to speak, the debate was well handled by Chris Walker of Waiheke Radio. It was fair and gave all candidates an equal opportunity to speak.
