When Loopy Len became our Mayor he made lots of promises - more and better services, more community pools, fabulous new public transport projects and so on. It should have set off warning bells but he got away with for a long time because he was busy making ‘plans’. Now we’re starting to see the fruits of all that planning.
Len has emptied the coffers on plans and planning, consultants and more consultants reports, his own gym and entourage, unelected Maori Statutory Board and other fripparies. So when it comes to actually getting down to core Council business there’s nothing left. It's all cuts and increased rates from now on.
Take one of Council’s core responsibilities, refuse collection. No more inorganic collections and instead of emptying bins once a week we’re told it’s going to be two or even three weekly collections. Now there’s progress.
Another example is libraries. Having only just got a top notch Community Library for Waiheke Loopy Len tells us he’s going to cut library hours and staff. How he’s got the gall to come over here and open the new Waiheke Library is beyond me.
Whaleoil puts it in a nutshell
It used to be that councils was all about water, waste and rubbish collection, but now they’re even trying to get out of that responsibility as much as possible. Instead we have social engineering, budgets for opera but not rescue helicopters, and reduction of services like rubbish collection and libraries.
All the while, you get charged more for everything, especially if you don’t use it, because as they make it more expensive, and people use services less, the councils put the rates up due to falling revenue.
