You do this by ensuring rates go DOWN in Manukau and UP everywhere else, including less well off communities like Waiheke. You tell your Manukau electorate they will soon be home to a northern Te Papa. You even spring a surprise on them by saying you’ll give them a Manukau light rail loop.
What? Where did that come from? It wasn’t in any plan amongst the mile high stack of plans already paid for by ratepayers. No, it was announced by Brown in one of the local rags, without any consultation with the Governing Body, with Auckland Transport or even the people of Manukau.
"We want to run light rail from Manukau up through Clover Park, all along Te Irirangi Drive, up to Highland Park, up Panmure Highway and back to Manukau."
Councillor Cameron Brewer responded
"I seriously think the Mayor has lost the plot. He keeps dreaming up all these projects with no idea of where the money is going to come from. He’s flying all over the place. Delivering a funding plan for his City Rail Link is where his focus should be, not dreaming up local light rail projects with the sole hope of winning back some support in the south."
