The pressure should be on to raise standards for the coming season. However, I've seen nothing in the Waiheke Local Board agendas to suggest they have any plans to improve local infrastructure or put out the welcome mat for visitors.
The first Board had a raft of measures designed to improve the tourist experience over summer including street banners, a walkways brochure, walkways maps for Oneroa and Rocky Bay, increased servicing of toilets and rubbish collections and a street cleaner to keep the island looking spic and span. Most of these were stopped by the incoming Board but maybe, in the light of experience, they will do the right thing and resurrect the ideas. They all help businesses prosper and if businesses do well so does the island economy. It's the small things that can make the most impact and we all want tourists to leave the island having enjoyed the experience. Don't we?
