The COMMUNITY pool promised in ‘Essentially Waiheke’ literature has morphed into a SCHOOL pool. Here’s the Board Chair on Facebook.
Paul Walden: Speculation and rumours are just that. The Local and School boards are taking steps to explore costs to build and operate a pool. There is a huge range of operating models and costs around the country and before any project can proceed on school grounds these need to be explored to see what suits best.
The first tranche of ratepayers money will be voted by the Board at tonight’s meeting. $25,000 of ratepayer’s money will be gifted to Waiheke High School Board of Trustees, headed by John Stansfield, partner of hard left Green list MP Denise Roche, with no accountability to ratepayers whatsoever, and no guidance from Council officers, just to pay for an investigation.
It’s only the beginning. A pool on school grounds will not be paid for by Council. Funds for maintenance and ongoing costs will come from Waiheke Local Board budgets to the detriment of the environment, community facilities and arts groups.
A further $110,000k is earmarked for the SCHOOL gym (Recreation Centre) in the Draft Local Board Annual Plan. I’ll make a prediction. The contract for the ‘community use’ of the gym will go to off-island business 'SwimGym'. They will also receive the contract to run the SCHOOL pool when it’s built using Waiheke’s rates.
Yet more money for the school is signalled in the Draft Local Board Annual Plan under ‘Investigating opportunities for school leaver employment prospects and capacity building’. This is a function of taxes not rates.
Who will do the ‘investigating’? Will it be another gift to John Stansfield? We'll see, and I'm looking.
