The campaign by John Meeuwsen was lampooned by likening it to the Greeks rejection of the terms of yet another IMF bailout. If the European Bank refuses to bankroll Greece’s loan repayment then a Greek exit (Grexit) from the euro looks inevitable followed by the collapse of the Greek economy. Greece is the sickest of the sick men of Europe.
Unlike Greece, Waiheke’s economy is booming and has done so ever since amalgamation first with Auckland City and then with the Auckland Supercity. Everybody knows the economy is booming which is why the TV One crew were having a laugh at Meeuwsen’s expense. Sick man of Auckland Waiheke ain’t.
Making the point that ‘NO’ Waiheke does not want to isolate itself from Auckland, was local businesswoman Sandy Baker. She, like most business owners, realises that the Waiheke economy would suffer hugely from a Wexit.
In a blog six months ago I said John Meeuwsen is regarded by many as the court jester on the Waiheke Local Board. Like Nobilangelo Ceramalus before him (a mere 6 years ago) he is making himself and the island into a laughing stock. But then, I guess that's what court jesters do.
