From work on the path so far, where it ends at O’Brien Rd, it seems the existing path is being widened and flattened. Perhaps when it is finished it is being paved with gold because only that could account for the cost.
Contrast this with new multi-use footpath along Onetangi Road built by the first WLB for a mere $150,000. The path is twice the distance of the ‘bridle path to nowhere’. It is surfaced to suit riders as well as pedestrians and links the native plant nursery, Golf Course, Riding Club, Historical Museum, pound paddock and Waiheke Cemetery as well as providing a much safer route for riders and pedestrians walking to Onetangi. The footpath connects several bus stops used by visitors to the half dozen vineyards along the road. In other words it serves multiple useful purposes.
The first Board had envisaged taking the footpath as far as Waiata Rd where it would link with the existing footpath but was stopped through lack of money. The logical step for this board would have been to use its resources to complete the job. It is therefore puzzling that it should have chosen instead to waste it on a path that already exists, has no businesses or community clubs along it, and nobody asked for.
It only remains illogical until you remember it leads from Chair of the Board, Paul Walden’s house at the end of Erua Rd to Walden’s Wank. We all know how much Walden loves his horses and how dearly ratepayers have been made to pay for his obsession..
You could be forgiven for thinking that ALL this local Board cares about is horses. After all, it has added not one jot of other infrastructure during its three years. Yet this Board inherited $1.4 million of infrastructure projects from the first WLB and has had similar discretionary budgets. The first WLB used its discretionary money to provide the community with a multitude of new assets (listed in the ‘background’ section of this website).
This all begs the question, where has all this Board's money gone? It certainly has not provided the one asset this ‘Essentially Waiheke’ Board promised – a community swimming pool. That’s goneburgers!
I will be hot on the trail of our how our money has been squandered by this WLB in tomorrow’s post. Now that will be pure gold for anyone wanting to replace them at this year's local body elections in October.
Ho, Ho, Ho ‘Walden’s Wank’ unfit for purpose.
