Now, of course, it may be that I simply do not understand the word. I struggle with some words. Discombobulating and antidisestablishmentarianism would be good examples. I accept this is a possibility. But I refuse to rule out option 2, which is that once elected, no politician is accountable, except until the occasion of the next election. In fact, I would go so far as to suggest that once they have their hands firmly on the reins of power, and their noses deep in the trough, most politicians are the absolute opposite of accountable.
John Banks is a prime example of this. Assuming the courts got it right, he should resign as an MP forthwith. Even if they got it wrong, he should accept the umpires decision, rather than lurk at the wicket until ordered from the pitch. Len Brown is another, perhaps even the least accountable man in NZ politics. He should have a big sign on his desk saying "The Buck starts here". Len simply carries on presiding over the financial equivalent of the Black Hole of Calcutta, grabbing credit if ever the opportunity presents itself, yet distancing himself from all other responsibility.
He lives in an ivory tower with no phone line in from the general public, the poor saps who finance his folly. And then there is our own dear Board, that motley crew of misled muppets who only really exist to further the nefarious ambitions of a property developer. Put aside, if you can, that they have achieved nothing. Disregard, if you will, that they have wasted an extraordinary sum of money in their relatively brief tenure. And ignore, if it is possible, that they have served only to deepen the wedge driven between Waihekians by that arch bludger, the soon to be ex MP.
Focus instead on their accountability. You will need damned good eyesight to do so, for it is less than zero. They believe they can fool all of the people all of the time. Of course, with the baying hordes of wippers, I admit this is possible. The wippers are but a tiny minority of disenfranchised losers. They do not speak for Waiheke, and they most certainly do not represent the Community. True, they nominally have 800 members, but most are fake IDs created to boost numbers and create the impression of popularity.
And even they are beginning to smell a rat where the board are concerned. Mutterings have been heard from the nether regions of wipp about how the board should be more open, more discursive about their activities. I long await the day when, in the vain pursuit of self interest, we see the board carry out something which goes against the wipp philosophy, some political compromise agreed for self gain. How they will turn on them, how they will howl. And how they will be ignored. So, accountability? No, none. Remember that next time round when the glib promises drip from their tongues.
