We have some of the best ship building companies in the world based here and many who are more than capable of building these vessels.
Surely the costs, both monetary, socially and emotionally, more than compensate for the extra expenditure of having these vessels built in NZ.
Some years ago I was involved in building new components for the new NZ trains and rolling stock. That industry is now dead, costing hundreds of jobs because "the Minister got a great deal to have them built overseas".
I am not a 'Lefty' but sympathize greatly with the companies that have invested millions in infrastructure and training, only to see their businesses collapse because they can't compete with overseas cheap labour.
Isn't about time we took a stand and say 'HEY IF IT CAN BE MADE HERE, THEN MAKE IT HERE'.
